Estêvão Willian has been named in Chelsea’s starting line-up for Saturday’s lunchtime clash with Manchester United, while Bruno Fernandes returns to the visitors’ side as captain following clear-the-air talks with manager Michael Carrick.
The Chelsea winger gets his chance after manager Xabi Alonso ruled out a January loan move for the Brazilian despite his limited playing time this season.
Fernandes, meanwhile, returns after being dropped to the bench for United’s defeat to Bournemouth last Sunday. His omission followed comments about Carrick’s tactics after the loss to Como.
Estêvão joins Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Morgan Rogers in Chelsea’s attack, with Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia also named in the starting side.
Before Saturday’s selection, the 19-year-old had started twice in 11 matches across all competitions this season and played just 47 minutes in the Premier League.
His lack of opportunities came under further scrutiny on Wednesday when he remained an unused substitute during Chelsea’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
However, Alonso insisted the winger remained part of his plans, dismissing suggestions he could leave on loan in January.
“No discussions about that,” Alonso said. “It’s no secret that all players want to be on the pitch. When any of them haven’t had enough minutes because of my decision, I have to take the responsibility for that.
“But everyone has to be ready because in any game they could be important. Este, his training and his attitude has been good.”
Estêvão joined Chelsea from Palmeiras last year in a £51.4m deal and impressed during his first season, scoring a solo goal against Barcelona before a hamstring injury ended his hopes of playing at the World Cup.
He has struggled for opportunities since returning from injury, although Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti recalled him to the national squad on Thursday.
Alonso said the youngster needed time to adjust to the demands of his system and English football.
“The demand of the Premier League is higher than other leagues because of the tempo. To be there as a teenager is not easy,” he said.
“That’s why to go through this filter is not for everyone. It takes time. Even then there will be mistakes. Mistakes are part of the learning process.”
The Chelsea manager said Estêvão’s development involved improving his decisions in possession as well as his work without the ball.
“It’s to keep the ball, it’s to find the right pass. And, as well, against the ball you need to be competitive,” Alonso said.
Chelsea head into the encounter with defensive concerns. Jorrel Hato has a back problem, while Maxence Lacroix is sidelined until after the international break with a hamstring injury sustained against Liverpool.
