A United States-based lobby and advisory firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has said that with the Democrats’ congressional wins on Tuesday, the threats by House Democrats and Senate Democrats to investigate Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s mining MoU with the United States will now become reality.
The firm said this in a post on its verified X handle on Wednesday while reacting to the US midterm results.
According to the firm, Democrats had earlier signaled plans to scrutinise the critical minerals deals negotiated by President Donald Trump’s administration, citing high corruption and pay-to-play concerns.
The firm wrote: “With the Democrats’ congressional wins last night, the threats by House Democrats and Senate Democrats to investigate President Bola Tinubu’s mining MoU and the reported but obviously false claims by the Nigerian Presidency that ‘we have settled the Americans’ are now going to become an absolute reality.”
Recall that the mining framework was reportedly signed in New York on September 23, 2026, at the Nigeria House on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, signed for Nigeria, while US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau signed for America.
The Nigerian government has said the deal is a framework to boost US investment in Nigeria’s mining sector and covers geological data, exploration, mineral development, processing and infrastructure.
